As all teachers of writing know, assessing essays can take up incredible amounts of time. Recently, I went through a batch of Social Studies reports my middle school students had written, and as I read through them, I noted recurring common problems. Accordingly, I prepared this little handout to discuss with students before they began revisions.
As I looked over this handout, I noted the frequent, somewhat inadvertent, incorporation of cognitive tools. Among them: metaphor, humor, binary oppositions, affective mental imagery, and extremes of experience.
Lesson learned: It’s so easy to make the use of cognitive tools habitual!
